Knits 201A: Raglan Sweatshirt

Knits have gotten a bad rap for being difficult to sew or needing special equipment (like a serger) but it doesn’t have to be that way. In this class you will sew a sweatshirt or t-shirt on the sewing machine, learning how to read and follow a pattern along the way. We will go over sizing, adjusting the pattern if needed, plus tips and tricks to make things easier.

This class teaches similar skills as our Knits 201B: Basic Tee class however this class features a raglan sleeve instead of a traditional set in or drop sleeve and is meant for both T-shirt and sweatshirt weight fabrics.

Skills you will learn in class

• How to accurately take your measurements and determine pattern size
  • It’s usually different than your clothing store size!
  • Making simple changes to a pattern to make it more accurately fit you

•  How to cut out your fabric
  • Pattern piece placement to ensure everything fits on your fabric
  • Paying attention to fabric print direction so nothing ends up upside down
  • Learning about grainlines and why it’s so important to follow them
  • Ever have a sleeve or pant leg twist on you? That’s because it wasn’t on grain
  • Scissors vs. rotary cutters and pins vs. weights

• Confidence in understanding and following the directions and knowing when it’s ok to make changes to make things easier.
• Attaching your neckband
  • How to ensure it lays flat

• Hemming your top
  • Hems vs. bands
  • How to avoid your fabric stretching out of shape while hemming

SKILL LEVEL: ADVANCED BEGINNER

PREREQUISITE: Sewing 101 or equivalent experience.

You should have previous machine sewing experience and have completed several projects. Please email erin@pacificfabrics.com if you are unsure if your skill level is appropriate.
